In the past, jails have been a place for the reformation and character building of prisoners. The prisoners were equipped with essential technical skills that help would help them earn respectfully after being released from the jails. In this article the writer points out that at present if a person goes to the jail accidently or in a petty crime he or she it is the environment of the jail that makes him or her a hardened criminal. The story looks at the reasons behind the current sorry state of affairs in Pakistani jails. Prisoners are deprived from all basic facilities mentioned in jail manuals even prisoners’ rights; one of the causes of the crimes is lack of proper trainings to the jail staff; overcrowding is also the huge challenge and restrict jail administration to initiate welfare programs.
